PEDODONTICS (CHILDREN)

1.PEDODONTICS

As a result of the change in people's eating habits, the incidence of caries has increased proportionally with the increase in cariogenic foods. The department of pedodontics in dentistry deals with oral and dental health, especially in children's early dentition and second dentition periods. Since children are physiologically and mentally different from adults, treatment procedures also change.

2. FLUORIDE APPLICATION

Fluoride Application, gel or polish forms applied to the tooth surface combine with the calcium in the tooth content and make the teeth more resistant to harmful acids.

Studies on the use of fluoride in the prevention of tooth decay have been ongoing since the end of the 19th century. After numerous studies have shown that fluoride can prevent caries even in very weak concentrations, methods are being developed that can benefit the most from its compounds for this purpose.

It can easily replace OH¯ ions in the apatite structure, which is very similar to itself in terms of ionic radius and number in the structure of tooth enamel, or it can form fluor-apatite with a more resistant structure by filling the place of missing OH¯ ions. This formation can be achieved by general fluoride intake or by local application of fluoride to the teeth, and as a result, tooth enamel has a less soluble structure against acids.

How to Apply?Fluoride-free pastes are recommended for daily use in children between the ages of 0-3 due to the risk of inadvertent swallowing. However, starting at the age of 3 when all primary teeth are complete, local fluoride applications to be performed during dentist check-ups can strengthen children's tooth enamel and protect them from caries.

There are two ways to use fluoride compounds for caries prophylaxis:

1. General (Systematic) Fluoride Intake

a. Fluoridation of drinking water
b. Fluoride tablets
c. Fluoride milks
d. Fluoride salts

2. Local (Topical) Fluoride Intake

a. Solutions
b. Gels (neutral, acidified)
c. Varnishes
d. Mouthwashes (gargles)
e. Fluoride toothpastes

3.FISSURE SEALANT

FISSURE SEALANT IS ESPECIALLY USED TO REMOVE SMALL HOLES ON THE TOOTH SURFACE WITH FILLING-LIKE MATERIALS WITHOUT DAMAGE TO THE TOOTH IN CHILDREN WHO HAVE NOT YET FORMED A REGULAR BRUSHING HABIT FILLING IS THE PROCESS OF FILLING THE THIN ROOFS ON THE CHEWING SURFACES OF MOLARS WITH A FLUID SUBSTANCE, MAKING THE TEETH EASIER TO CLEAN.

Fissure Sealant Generally, these areas are the places where decay begins due to food residues entering and getting stuck there and not being able to be cleaned. We can prevent the formation of decay with this method, which we call preventive dentistry.

How is it applied? The period when the first permanent molars appear in the mouth is ideal for application. This is approximately around the age of 6. It is applied to the other molars when they erupt (come out). It is a half-hour, painless procedure that does not require any needles.
